Beneficial Effects of Antioxidants in Male Infertility Management: A Narrative Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Background: Infertility, defined as the failure to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse, affects 50–80 million people worldwide. A male factor is involved in approximately 20–30% cases. In etiology infertility, association between poor semen quality and oxidative stress (OS) well known. High levels reactive oxygen species (ROS) allow oxidation DNA, proteins, lipids sperm cells, modifying their vitality, motility, morphology. Methods: To evaluate effects antioxidants on infertile men, we queried MEDLINE database (via PubMed interface) for published studies last 10 years (2011–2021). The following keywords were used: “infertility” -“inositol”, -“alpha-lipoic acid”, -“zinc”, -“folate”, -“coenzyme Q10”, -“selenium”, -“vitamin”. Results: Inositol regulates OS cells thanks its role mitochondrial reactions several processes favoring sperm–oocyte interactions. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) reduces ROS damage improves parameters terms spermatozoa’s morphology, count. Poor zinc nutrition may be related low sperm. Supplementation folate plus has a positive effect concentration with CoQ10 increases concentration, total progressive motility. Selenium (Se) supplementation overall higher ejaculated volume. Among vitamins, only vitamin B12 shows quality; it count motility DNA damage. Conclusions: men showing low-quality semen, diet improve by alleviating OS-induced enhancing hormone synthesis spermatozoa Future clinical trials should focused possible take advantage combined mechanisms action.

Mechanisms of male infertility: role of antioxidants.

Defective sperm function is the most common cause of infertility, and until recently, was difficult to evaluate and treat. Mammalian spermatozoa membranes are rich in poly unsaturated fatty acids and are sensitive to oxygen induced damage mediated by lipid peroxidation. Hence, free radicals and reactive oxygen species [ROS] are associated with oxidative stress and are likely to play a number of...

A Review: Role of oxidative stress in male infertility

Recent studies have shown that reactive oxygen species (ROS) have a very important role in the intracellular signaling process in physiological conditions. On the other hand, during the recent decade it has been indicated that ROS play a role in various types of male infertility and it is due to the overproduction of ROS or decrease in the antioxidant defense system in the reproductive system a...

Varicocele and Male Infertility: Current Issues in Management-A Review

Varicocele is the most common correctable cause of male factor infertility. The role of varicocele in the etiology of male infertility is still controversial regarding to whom varicocelectomy should be done and the selection should be meticulous. With the recent advances in biomolecular and development of novel sperm functional tests, it has been possible to better understand the mechanism invo...

Male infertility: a critical review of pharmacologic management.

INTRODUCTION Male factor infertility contributes partially and solely to the problem of childlessness in around 50% of the cases. Unfortunately, 30 - 50% of the etiologies of male infertility are unknown and therefore, no specific therapy can be instituted. Evidence-based medical therapy for male infertility is an attractive research area where a large number of clinical trials, controlled and ...

Oxidative stress and antioxidants in male infertility: a difficult balance

Infertility is one of the most stressful conditions amongst married couples. Male factor infertility is implicated in almost half of these cases. Recent advances in the field of reproductive medicine have focused the attention of many researchers to consider reactive oxygen species (ROS) as one of the mediators of infertility causing sperm dysfunction. Although, ROS is involved in many physiolo...
